Old news

All that is old will be new again.

2023 News:

05-Dec-2023: Still meeting but at another club's venue, this month

Our next club meeting will be on next Sunday 10 December 2023 hosted by the Cumberland Association at Annandale Community Centre at 79 Johnston street Annandale from 9am.

As you are aware the usual venue at Rydalmere Catholic Church Hall is still not be available and the Cumberland Association has kindly agreed to share their Christmas meeting with us.

They traditionally play a plenary Age of Eagles Napoleonic game, which we can join in if we have the figures or arrange from someone from Cumberland to bring them for us. However, the gaming is not restricted to age of Eagles and people can bring their own games and play them.

One thing they do is a Christmas lunch which has been traditionally catered (at a small cost) by the partner of one of the guys ( Grant). However, he would like to know how many are coming to see if this arrangement is feasible this year, so please if you are coming let them know on their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/groups/116056005106026/.

As to future meetings there are a number of options but I have been unsuccessfully trying to arrange a members meeting by zoom. If we have enough members there on Sunday I think we should have an impromptu meeting about it and decide what to do.

So let us know if you are coming, what you intend to play and so on. I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible and, for those who cannot attend, have a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

05-Nov-2023: Change of venue for November

We've been told by the church office that the hall is not going to be available for November, due to renovations.  At this stage I'm not sure when it will be available.  We'll send an email around with a possible temporary venue or potentially a visit to another club.  Check our Facebook Group for more deails.

04-Sept-2023: September meeting date move a week

We've have just heard back from the church office that the hall is not going to be available on 10 September, but will be available on 17 and 24 September.

We have therefore booked the hall for our meeting for 17 September, although that could be changed to 24 September if that was inconvenient for a large number of people.

Please let us know, but the default position is that the meeting has changed to 17 September.

19-May-2023: DDay YouTube funding drive

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-2hkLVlfbRc

The people at the YouTube WW2 channel are looking for funds to help them complete their 24 hours long documentary on D-Day.  If you are interested, click on the link above and have a look.  I think they are well worth supporting.  Their ongoing week-by-week coverage of WW2 is excellent.

01-May-2023: SWC Facebook group

We've just created a public group on Facebook for the Sydney Wargames Club: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sydneywargamesclub

It's an open group but your first post will require Admin approval.  Please be patient, as we currently have just one administrator.  We welcome volunteers to help moderate.

09-Apr-2023: Peter Nathan Toy Soldiers

I don't want to turn this site into advertising, but ... I popped into the Peter Nathan Toy Soldiers store in the Sydney CBD and had a look around, bought some figures and had a chat.  Gone are the days of having a few of these stores around to browse through, so it's good to see one trying to keep their doors open.

I bought some 28mm Romans and Celts, and I noticed that they also stock some Eureka Miniatures.  They also had a painted Carthaginian army on display and for sale - it looked quite impressive.  Their usual fare are the larger scale display figures, all quite striking.  So, I would encourage people to pop in and maybe we can keep our hobby in business.

15-Mar-2023: Changes to upcoming meeting dates.

Please note that for the next 2 months (April and May) are meetings will not be on the usual second Sunday of the month. This is because the second Sunday in April is Easter Sunday, and the second Sunday in May is Mother's Day on which days we expect many people will not be able to attend.

Therefore we have arranged with the church administration to have use of the hall on Sunday 16 April for our April meeting and on Sunday 28 May for our May meeting.

We look forward to seeing you all then.

11-Jan-2023: Happy new year!

January is always a quiet one, for the club, as members spend time away with their families, but we did manage a couple of tables this month - both WW2.  Welcome back, everyone!

2022 News:

21-Nov-2022: End-of-Year Meeting in December - Midway!

The November meeting saw 4 tables.  A large Napoleonic game set in Spain; a couple of WW2 tables and a board game.  A writeup of the Spanish game can be found in the "Battle reports" section.

NEXT month is our end-of-year "special themed" meeting.  Traditionally we do a "Wings of War", or similar, fighter combat game with everyone involved.  Last year we did Pearl Harbour ("Tora, Tora, Tora"), where each player fought a few dog-fights in the morning, to learn the rules, and then, after lunch, we did a limited attack on a few ships.  It was a lot of fun.  This year, we will be doing Midway.  Again, the morning will be "learning" (or refreshing on) the rules, and the afternoon will be a set of carrier and island raids.

All are welcome, new or experienced, it doesn't matter.  The point is to have fun and see off the year.  I hope to see you there.

5 tables today:

18-Jun-2022: Battle report - Battle of Muhldorf, 1805

Michael Brown has posted an after action/battle report for the final battle in Andrew Brew’s “Throne and Altar” 1805 Napoleonic Bavarian

campaign, set in late 1805.  You can read his report here: Battle of Muhldorf

13-Mar-2022: Meetings back to 'normal'

Today's meeting saw somewhat of a return to normal for the club.  Following last month's AGM, the committee remains as per last year, and meetings are expected to see further relaxing of COVID rules an restrictions.  All are welcome.  We hope to see all our members start to enjoy the rolling of dice together this year.

A battle report has been added to the website, written by Michael B.  I'm sure his 'one-sided' commentary could do with a balanced counter report from the French side (cue Black Adder comment or two).  You can read his report here: French vs Prussians - 13th March, 2022

05-Jan-2022: Games planned for our January meeting

9th January will see our first 2022 meeting.  Along with our AGM, we're planning the following games:

Other games may be played (they usually are).  Participants welcomed.

COVID vaccination requirements are as per NSW government and Church guidelines and laws.  Please check updates to these, if you are intending to attend the meetings.  At this stage, everyone is welcome and expected to mask up and signin.

31-Dec-2021: End of year.

Our final meeting of the year was based on the now traditional "Wings of War/Glory" fighter combat, and saw us dueling in the morning and doing a (very simplified) Pearl Harbour.

Our next meeting will be in Januaury and there will be an AGM.  If anyone is interested in being on the committee, you're welcome to nominate.

I hope 2022 will see us emerge stronger than ever - we look forward to seeing you all.

19-Nov-2021: We are meeting again.

Our November meeting was held under relaxed COVID rules.  One group played a Napoleonic game, another WW2 British Home guard vs mounted SS, and a third reviewing Wings of Glory in preparation for the upcoming December 'special', which will be Pearl Harbour this year.

We're looking forward to our December meeting, which will be on the 12th.  More details on the event will be emailed soon.

05-Sept-2021: COVID Update

With The NSW lockdowns being extended, the next meeting date is anyone's guess.  Please stay safe and get vaccinated.

15-July-2021: COVID Update

With The NSW lockdowns being extended, the hoped for alternative July meeting has been scrapped.  We are still hopeful for August, but we'll have to wait and see how we go.

8-July-2021: COVID Update

With the NSW lockdowns due to COVID-19 restrictions, the scheduled 11th July meeting has been cancelled.

We will notify those on our mailing list if otherwise, but we do expect our meeting on Sunday, 8th August to still be on, at this stage.
